Ouray ~ The Million Dollar Highway

The portion of U.S. 550 which runs from Montrose through the San Juan Mountains and connects Ouray and Silverton is amazingly colorful in late September when the aspen leaves are becoming brilliant yellow. Driving through a series of passes higher than 10,000 feet, we see hillsides covered in yellow aspens which fill the skyline for miles around.

The vistas range from deep crevasses to waterfalls to quiet glass-smooth lakes to winding gravel roads through groves of aspens amid a horizon of snow-capped mountains.
