This is presented in three sections: The lake, the Dam and its namesake rock formation, then the outflowing Rio Grande. Both Elephant Butte Lake and its neighbor Caballo Lake, were formed by damming the Rio Grande.

The dam is immense, and neatly placed both for morning and evening sunlight. In addition, it sits right across a narrow rive passage from the Elephant Butte rock formation, for which everything here is named.
