Chama, New Mexico and the Cumbres & Toltec Railway
Chama is a superb base from which to explore. The Cumbres & Toltec Railroad operates its trains from here, and the Fall scenery is superb in all directions.
The railroad operates multiple runs to Antonito, some 60 miles or so away, but I concentrated on the fifteen miles or so from Chama out to Cumbres Pass. As you will see, the opportunities to be close to the trains is amazing, because the train track parallels and crosses Highway 17 three times in that distance.
You will see that when the train is heavily loaded, it requires two locomotives. The Lobato Trestle won't carry so much weight, to one locomotive decouples and goes across the trestle separately. Then the train crosses and the locomotive recouples.
