3 Moki Dugway

Southern Utah Summer 2018

The Moki Dugway is an experience, as well as an engineering feat of real consequence. It brings one from the top of the plateau down some 1,300 feet to the valley floor, just outside the entrance to Valley of the Gods.

From the top end, you are on your way to Bears Ears, Natural Bridges and eventually Hite Crossing.

I have driving it a number of times on earlier visits, with hand-held video and a GoPro. This time I could use the drone to express it.

The Moki Dugway was constructed in 1958 by Texas Zinc, a mining company, to transport uranium ore from the "Happy Jack" mine in Fry Canyon to the processing mill in Mexican Hat. The State Road Commission added SR-261 to the state highway system in 1957, following its present alignment from SR-47 (now US-163) north of Mexican Hat to SR-95.
